If your business is many foam grades in modest quantities, box foaming lets you switch formulations fast without stopping a whole line. If you are feeding mattress or converter customers with steady demand, a continuous line wins on cost per cubic metre.

2. Size the line to your real demand, not the brochure

Three numbers drive sizing:

  1. Daily / monthly output in tonnes or cubic metres — undersizing caps your growth; oversizing freezes capital and raises scrap.
  2. Density and hardness range — soft low-density seating foam and firm high-density foam need different metering ranges and mixing control.
  3. Block dimensions your downstream cutters and customers expect — the line, the curing area, and the storage all have to agree.

Ask any supplier to size the machine from your numbers, and to state the realistic output at your densities — not just the peak figure.

3. The subsystems that decide foam quality

  • Metering and mixing head — accurate ratio and stable mixing is what keeps cell structure even. This is where cheap lines fail first.
  • Additive and blowing-agent dosing — flexible foam uses water and often physical blowing agents; dosing precision controls density and softness.
  • Temperature control — component and mould/conveyor temperature drive the rise profile and skin quality.
  • Cutting and handling — horizontal/vertical cutters, block transfer, and curing space are part of the line, not an afterthought.

4. Formulation support: the hidden differentiator

A machine that arrives with no starting formulations leaves you burning weeks (and drums of chemicals) tuning your first blocks. Confirm the supplier provides commissioning support and starter recipes for the grades you intend to run, and can advise on local raw-material substitution. This is often worth more than a small price difference on the hardware.

  • Continuous or box — and why, for my order profile?
  • What density and hardness range can the line hold?
  • Do you provide starting formulations and on-site commissioning?
  • What spares and consumables should I stock, and what is their lead time?
  • Can you show flexible-foam lines you have actually built and shipped — not just insulation or spray machines?
